There is a peculiar irony unfolding in modern offices. The more we automate, the busier we seem to become. You open a colleague’s project summary, admire the polished formatting and sharp grammar, but within minutes realise something is wrong. The insights are superficial, recommendations generic, and in places the report even contradicts itself. This is not productivity. This is workslop: AI-generated content that looks professional but delivers little of real value.
What is Workslop?
The term was introduced by researchers at BetterUp Labs and Stanford’s Social Media Lab to describe the growing phenomenon of content that masquerades as valuable work but creates more problems than it solves. In a recent study, nearly 40 percent of workers reported receiving “workslop” in the past month, with each instance costing an average of two hours to fix or rewrite. For large organisations, the cumulative drain on productivity is significant.
In the UK context, this challenge could not be more pressing. The Office for National Statistics (ONS) found in 2023 that just 15 percent of UK businesses had adopted at least one form of AI technology, while over 60 percent had invested in more traditional software tools. AI adoption is increasing rapidly, yet measured gains remain elusive. Other studies, including academic work based on UK data, have found no clear link between AI adoption and productivity growth. At the same time, consultancies such as KPMG suggest that generative AI could, in theory, boost UK GDP by around £31 billion, if organisations learn how to deploy it effectively.
The contrast between potential and practice could not be starker.
Why Workslop Happens
Workslop is not simply a matter of laziness. It is the product of three overlapping dynamics:
- The illusion of competence. AI outputs look professional and confident, which can convince non-experts that they must be accurate or strategically sound. Without subject matter expertise, it is difficult to spot logical flaws, hallucinated facts, or missing context.
- The single-prompt culture. Too many people treat AI like a vending machine: submit one request, accept the first draft, and move on. In reality, high-quality results require iterative prompting, validation, and refinement.
- Mandated adoption without understanding. When leaders set “AI usage” as a performance metric, without frameworks for measuring quality, they risk incentivising volume over value. This creates the appearance of progress while undermining real productivity.
The net result is work that looks finished but is strategically incoherent, often passing hidden costs downstream to colleagues who must correct or completely redo it.
The True Cost of Invisible Work
When an employee submits AI-generated output that misses the mark, the burden shifts to the recipient. They must diagnose what is wrong, determine what was actually required, and then either fix the errors or start from scratch. If they do not have the influence to push back, the extra work is silently absorbed. If they do, time is wasted on revisions and frustration builds.
This invisible tax accumulates across an organisation. Productivity metrics look impressive, adoption numbers rise, and leaders celebrate digital progress. Yet in reality, output quality stagnates or declines. The organisation has traded efficiency for activity.
Building Competence, Not Just Compliance
The solution is not to ban AI. Nor is it to push adoption at any cost. The answer lies in building competence:
- AI literacy. Teams must understand how large language models function, where they are useful, and where they are unreliable.
- Iteration as standard. First drafts should be treated as starting points, never as final outputs.
- Clear standards. Organisations need benchmarks for what constitutes acceptable AI-assisted work.
- Accountability. Leadership must measure outcomes, not usage. Rewarding adoption without considering quality is the fastest route to workslop.
